[SPOILER WARNING]
I'm late to the party hi!
Some of you might be thinking "But this movie isn't anime!". Well for those of you who don't know Alita: Battle Angel was inspired (or a remake) by the manga series Battle Angel Alita (or Gunnm in Japanese) by Yukito Kishiro. That was the reason for my first interest in the series. The second interest came from Alita's ridiculous large eyes which I wanted to know how they'd pull it off.

I went to watch this movie two weeks ago. It starts with Dr. Dyson Ido finding Alita in the middle of the junkyard of the city. He takes her home and repairs her. When she wakes up, Alita doesn't remember anything about her past and realises that she instinctively remembers the legendary martial art Panzer Kunst. Soon after she remembers something about her past which makes her want to know more but Dr. Ido refuses to tell her. She then finds a Berserker body from an old downed ship outside the city, which Ido refuses to install her in. Alita decides to register herself as a Hunter-Warrior and find out more about herself as well as defeat Grewishka. The other hunters refuse to help her and later she gets her body destroyed by Grewishka himself. Ido then decides to install her on the Berserker body and she enters the Motorball tryout race as a means to send Hugo, her loved one, to Zalem, the sky city. It doesn't go as planned as Hugo almost gets himself killed by another Hunter-Warrior after he was framed for murder. Alita is able to save him but he loses his human body and Dr. Ido gives him a cyber one. Hugo tries to go to Zalem by his own means but gets killed in the process. Alita continues to compete in Motorball in hopes to get to Zalem and kill Vector, the ruler of Zalem, as well as destroy the city as her mission tells her.

So there's no doubt: the special effects are awesome. Alita's eyes are really well made and the cyberbodies too. Everything in this movie just seems really well made. Regarding the plot I do have some things to point out. When Alita gets mad at Ido because he won't install her in the Berserker body she smashes one of his cars with tools. In my opinion that scene just seems so random. Of course she would get mad because she wanted to know more about herself but she smashed the car out of nowhere and then no one comments about it. I don't know maybe I´m just nitpicking but I just thought it was weird.

Another thing was right after Alita and Hugo's first kiss. After that it seemed like the producers just wanted to get the movie done with. Some of the scenes after that seemed so rushed for example where Alita decides to give her heart to Hugo. She was so eager to find out more about herself and fight and out of nowhere she is willing to throw it all out the window?

And one last thing: the ending. Hugo rushes off and tries to go to Zalem and Alita rushes out after him. He gets almost his whole body destroyed and Alita is not able to save him. This obviously is an emotional scene. She loses her loved one. My problem with it is: why doesn't she get to mourn? Alita just saw her loved one fall of from god knows how many meters and she just sits there for about 5 seconds and then they cut to the future where she's about to become a Motorball champion and go to Zalem. Then the movie ends. Alita should've been able to mourn Hugo a little better.

Ok in general this movie had a lot of potential and I don't know if I didn't enjoy it as much because of all the hype but it could've been better. The effects are worth it but I still recommend the manga if your interested.
