[SPOILER WARNING]
I went to watch this movie in theatres like 2 months ago but I forgot to review it, plus I didn't really know what to say about it to be honest. Ok so let's unpack this.
This movie first caught my attention because in my country, anime movie don't really make it to theatres so this was unusual. Then I saw that it was nominated for an Oscar and so I decided it was mandatory for me to watch the movie. The beautiful art style of the poster also caught my attention so I went and watched the movie, but when I left the cinema I felt rather underwhelmed.
It's not that the ending wasn't good, I for one thought the ending was quite good but I was kind of expecting more of a movie that was nominated for an Oscar.

The art style and animation, like I said, were beautiful and I think it was quite worth it because of that but that didn't tune out the annoying screams of our protagonist Oota. The older brother of Mirai was constantly being mean to his sister and annoying his parents, not to talk about the obnoxious screams every time something didn't go his way. Although that's a normal behaviour for a little boy who feels left out because of his baby sister, the whole purpose of him meeting his sister when she's older, his dog's human form, his mother when she was his age, his great-grandfather and even his older self was so that he learned that there are more important things than what he wants and to understand his parents situation a little better.

I know he is a little boy but just as it seemed like he was about to learn something from what he just went through, he'd just fall back to being annoying.
That honestly was the only thing that ticked me off. Although it seems like a minor problem, when your protagonist is just obnoxious and annoying, it's hard to enjoy whatever you're watching to 100%.
The story of the movie was beautifully written and the intention of all the crazy things happening to our protagonist was easy to understand. By the end of the movie, I think Oota finally learned that his sister wasn't there to take his place and that he should just enjoy her company and make the most out of their childhood.

I think the movie started out ok and went on ok too. When Oota met his great-grandfather, that's when it got great for me. I sensed a growth in his character from that experience and the story behind his great-grandfather was also really interesting.
In the end, Mirai of the Future wasn't one of my favourites and I know Mamoru Hosoda has better works, but it was still enjoyable for what it offered and I would really recommend you check it out.
